The first half of 2022 mainly focused on Russia's aggression against Ukraine, which was quickly reacted to by the Polish media. Gazeta.pl also worked not only in terms of writing but it was also strongly involved in a number of aid measures. Currently, its team is presenting results of the steps taken in a cyclical engagement report summarising the commitments towards readers. Gazeta.pl is the only website in Poland with a publishing statement describing the approach and operating principles of journalists who want to create an Internet-based medium for new times.
The ambition of Gazeta.pl is to change the world for the better by focusing on important social issues. Human rights, free media, ecology, education, mental health, post-millennials, inclusive language, fact-checking, journalism of solutions, opinions and comments – these are the pillars of this year's commitments of the portal. They have proved extremely important in recent months, which have been dominated by the war in Ukraine.
In the first months of 2022, the activities of the Gazeta.pl team were guided by events in Ukraine. The portal journalists report the latest news on an ongoing basis, preparing expert materials, including in Ukrainian on the Ukrayina.pl website, which was created for Ukrainians living in Poland. Gazeta.pl has also contributed to providing humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian people, becoming a partner of the Polish Centre for International Assistance (PCPM) collection. Thanks to the efforts of Ukrainian journalists, Gazeta.pl obtained unique post stamps signed, among others, by Vitali Klitschkoa, Dmytro Kuleba and Roman Hrybov, a famous soldier from the Snake Island. Over PLN 120 thousand from the post stamps auction, carried out jointly with PCMP and the Allegro Charity, has already been allocated for the purchase of ambulances and medical equipment for Ukraine. In addition, Gazeta.pl, together with the Miasto Jest Nasze Association and Ukrayina.pl created a campaign entitled “Do not feed Putin”, where the portal journalists responded how we could contribute to reducing Russia's profits from oil trade, through ecology.
Despite the war in Ukraine, the journalists of Gazeta.pl do not forget about what is happening at the border with Belarus. In April, the rewarded Gazeta.pl journalist duo, Anna Alboth and Karol Grygoruk, returned to the Polish-Belarusian border. The thrilling report on the situation of refugees from Belarus appeared on the pages of the portal. Gazeta.pl once again also joined the celebration of the Pride Month. On 25 June 2022, on the day of the Pride Parade taking place in Warsaw, Gazeta.pl and the social media channels of the portal as part of the “Tomorrow in Poland” campaign, featured headlines of the “future”, allowing readers to imagine what an LGBTQA+ friendly Polish Community could look like. Gazeta.pl also focuses heavily on the fight for women's rights. This is why at the beginning of the year there was a guide on “How to write about women?” – a generally available language guide prepared by Wiktoria Beczek, content coordinator for diversity and inclusiveness at Gazeta.pl, which deals, among other things, with narrative clichés attributable to women as well as media terms requiring change and feminatives. In celebration of Mother's Day, Gazeta.pl presented another socially important project – the Niewidzialnyetat.pl website along with a calculator of work performed at home. In doing so, Gazeta.pl prompted discussions regarding “invisible job”.
However, the most recent engagement report does not only focus on difficult topics. It also mentions the unique “Polska Stories” project of the Weekend.Gazeta.pl website, where young authors obtain training under the supervision of the reporter Olga Gitkiewicz. Free workshops will result in publications at Gazeta.pl. In February of this year, the Sport.pl Four Streams Tournament was also held. As part of the event, the editorial team wanted to combine the interest of Poles in ski jumping and winter Olympics, as well as e-sport and Twitch. The charity game of Deluxe Ski Jump 2 was participated by well-known streamers, whose competition attracted more than 170 thousand users on Twitch and as much as 1.5 million on TikTok.
