„Gazeta Wyborcza” publishes its Climate Declaration

„Gazeta Wyborcza” publishes its Climate Declaration

The COP26 climate summit, known as the "last chance saloon", which will begin on Sunday, October 31, 2021 will surely go down in history. Whether the world leaders make bold commitments depends on our ability to avoid a climate catastrophe. On this occasion, on the last day of the "Week with Climate" campaign, the editors of "Gazeta Wyborcza" and Wyborcza.pl presented the "Climate Declaration", announcing daily’s even greater commitment to climate and environmental protection. The full text of the declaration was published on October 27, 2021 in the paper edition of „Gazeta Wyborcza” and on Wyborcza.pl

Ecology has been featured in „Gazeta Wyborcza” since the daily’s inception. Its editorial office publicized many important topics related to environmental protection as the first medium in Poland. This was the case, for example, with the fight against smog, protection of the Białowieża Primeval Forest or the stoppage of construction of the road through the Rospuda Valley.

The "Climate Declaration" of the daily contains the most important principles that the "Wyborcza’s" team follows when preparing journalistic materials on ecology. The document clearly mentions the plans to develop the "Climate and Environment" department, launched by Wyborcza.pl in February this year (Wyborcza.pl/klimat) to talk better and more often than before about what is happening both in Poland and in the world in terms of ecology and climate. The editors of „Gazeta Wyborcza” and Wyborcza.pl also support the postulate of the Climate Coalition (which assumes that Poland should abandon coal-burning by 2030) by regularly reporting the actions that the government must take to achieve this goal and plan to hold politicians accountable for their promises and statements on climate change. One of the priorities of local editorial offices of "Wyborcza" will also be taking up the topics related to green areas in Polish cities and regions.

In addition to the promise to publish reliable and proven information on the environment and climate thanks to trainings with experts in nature and climate protection, „Gazeta Wyborcza” also declared to develop partnerships with foreign experts, as well as newspapers under the existing alliances: LENA (Leading European Network Alliance), and also with the „New York Times” and „The Conversation” magazine. Translations of articles on climate and environmental protection prepared by these media will be regularly published in the paper and online edition of the daily. Its team also plans to support non-governmental organizations that run projects for environmental protection, i.a. ones similar to a special offer of digital subscription of "Gazeta Wyborcza", launched in March this year, from which all revenues were received by the Dzika Polska Foundation for the implementation of the "Emergency for trees" campaign. To date, more than PLN 70 thou. have been collected.

Over the next year, the "Wyborcza" team also plans to start an educational project for children and young people, which will be devoted to the climate crisis and environmental protection, and it wants to support companies that are transforming towards a climate-neutral economy by verifying the information they provide. The daily will also continue to promote pro-environmental attitudes among its readers, as it has been done so far, i.a. on a special website and in the weekly ecological newsletter, to which one can subscribe on Wyborcza.pl/newsletters.

The editorial office of the dailu announced also that in October 2022 it would present a report on the implementation of the commitments published in 2021, as well as plans for 2023. The "Wyborcza" team also encourages readers to share suggestions or ideas for initiatives  on environmental issues by writing at klimat@wyborcza.pl.

The full text of the „Climate Declaration” was published in the "Gazeta Wyborcza" issue of October 27, 2021 and on the Wyborcza.pl website - here.

"Gazeta Wyborcza" is the largest opinion-forming daily in Poland, the content of which is available both in paper and digital form.

Wyborcza.pl is a website presenting content prepared by the editors of "Gazeta Wyborcza" - articles, video materials, podcasts, multimedia reportages. They are also available in the mobile application and in the version for e-readers.

"Gazeta Wyborcza" is the leader in the digitization process of the press in Poland. At the end of June 2021, the community of subscribers of the digital edition of the journal numbered 258 thousand.
